Gardens are one of the unique elements which can be seen both in Chinese and Persian architecture. This comes from the important role that nature has in both cultures. In Iranian garden, the water flows in straight direction where as in Chinese garden, we can see a calm and serene pond, covered with lots of lotus flowers that makes the space moody and prepares the atmosphere for meditation. In Chinese beliefs, lotus flower symbolizes purity.

As it is shown in the concept diagram, the museum building is a metaphor of a Chinese garden with the lotus pond in middle, seems it has been separated from the earth, located in an upper level like a suspended garden, so the museum façade consist of different soil layers, just like a piece of the ground. The museum building located in the site, respecting the current symmetrical positioning of the site plan and the relationship with the neighboring building, it is part of the city, so a great attention is paid to the landscape, open space and specially the roof.

The outer structure is quite simple with a cubic shape. The dimensions of this cube are 122 by 122 meters, located in a land 29700 sqm. The outer views of the building are simple and uniform like the layering of the ground. This may bring in mind the simplicity of Iranian architecture which is complicated and mysterious inside, but simple outside. There are three main entrances for this building from north (Fuzhong Yi Street), south through (Fuzhong) and west (through Pengcheng Street). The eastern face is closed completely, since there is no entrance considered for this part, in the main plan.

The 24 meters high lobby called “Water Atrium” is a focal point located deep in the heart of the museum. It is placed below ground, beneath a large lotus pond. Dramatic water atrium is entered by means of descending stairs in three directions appearing to draw visitors to the mysterious world under water. At upper floors, the atrium is surrounded by other spaces. At west side of atrium, raises a grand ramp to access different levels and galleries. In addition, six stair-elevators make the vertical connection possible. Each circular gallery (Lotus gallery) is based on a single column floating in water atrium.

At first glance, a high glass ceiling accompanied with huge pillars creates surreal and fantastic space, drawing the attention of a new comer. The circular galleries in upper floors are connected to each other like cells. Yet through a surrounding corridor, they are connected to other galleries. Visiting the galleries begins from lower floors which continues, never stops and then through the elevators and stairs leads people to the roof which is considered as the last gallery. In this museum, a great attention has been paid to the roof, as urban landscape in relation of the other sections of the site.

After visiting and exploring all the museum spaces and rising to the roof, people reach the “Lotus Pond”. In fact, this is the last gallery to visit in which delicate lotus leaves are floating on serene water where people can walk and sit. It is a place for meeting, gathering and tied relations between people. Another nice daily view of this magical pond is seen from tall buildings nearby. The neighboring buildings perceive the museum as a garden beside them that they can look at its beautiful pond everyday and see all the life, movement and activity inside it. Outdoor access to the roof is directly from a ramp, at east side of the building.
